What will be the outcome, if an internationally renowned designer encounters an open-minded entrepreneur and they come across an innovative environmental project? – Well, the result is – the „grazfleck“.
It is both blanket and cape, made of Styrian Loden, a pure produce of sheep wool. With just a few twists and turns the grazfleck can be worn as a poncho.
The cosy blankets were presented in Graz on 11 October and are meant to replace patio heaters which are a waste of energy in outdoor cafés and restaurants in winter. The concept was created in course of the Designers in Residence program of Creative Industries Styria in cooperation with Klaus Kempenaars, Styrian designer of Dutch origin and Styrian Loden manufacturer Steiner 1888. The project itself was initiated by Andrea Pavlovec-Meixner, municipal councillor of the Green party in Graz.
Klaus Kempenaars created both form and pattern of the garment, displaying characteristic themes of Graz in three different colour combinations. Parts of the BIX-Façade of Kunsthaus Graz, the construction structure of „Lichtschwert“ and the patterns of the Orangerie are woven into the fleecy loden – a great challenge both in design and production.
However, the grazfleck is also a vivid sign for the City of Design Graz and the successful network.
